Xcode tools, grace, fortran..incompatibility ?

I installed xmgrace which works fine (downloaded from the site HPC) and then I tried to install fortran. When trying to compile I get the error message that the assembler "as" is not found.
I thus install Xcode tools in order to get "as" but then....grace is not working anymore (I get a "segmentation fault" when I try to launch xmgrace). I tried to reinstall everything but I still have the same problem and I see only one solution at this point: How can install "as" by itself without using Xcode tools which apparently scrumbles my system ? Or maybe do you have another solution ?
