Tools for (searchable) image annotation?

I'm an anthropology graduate student trying to find better ways to manage his data. I have tried out Atlas.ti and love its option to create searchable annotated regions within digital images. Is there a program out there for Mac that has comparable functionality with the same level of user friendliness? I know about HyperRESEARCH, but I find the inability to zoom in/out on an image to be too much of a drawback.
