Running PASW 17 in SL after Java 1.5 install?

SPSS announces that PASW 17.0.2 will not run on SnowLeopard due to the missing JAVA 1.5 elements [http://support.spss.com/Tech/Troubleshooting/ResSearchDetail.asp?id=85784]. However, on the web there are a few suggestions for how to get JAVA 1.5 installed in SL, e.g. [http://wiki.oneswarm.org/index.php/OS_X_10.6_Snow_Leopard]. I am wondering if anybody has tried this or another solution to run PASW 17 on SL? Not being well-versed in the innards of command lines I hesitate to do this because I wouldn't know how to remove the installed JAVA 1.5 if things went wrong.
