Octave: zoom in x11

How do I zoom in on a portion of a plot in X11 on a macbook pro? Gnuplot help tells me to use button 2 for scaling, but button 2 on the mac is either ctrl-click or two finger click. I can't make any graph interactions using two fingers, and ctrl-click simply rotates the graph axes.
How do I zoom with my trackpad?
Thanks!

It works with ctrl-click on
It works with ctrl-click on my machine, under Tiger.
Did you choose "Emulate three buttons mouse" in the preferences ?
Just to make it clear, you
Just to make it clear, you do this from the X11 application preferences.
I did, but ctrl-click in 3D
I did, but ctrl-click in 3D only rotates plot axes. The closest I get to a zoom option is using alt-click and horizontal stroke. This, however, does not select a subset to zoom in on, but rather blows up the plot from its origin. Is this what the zoom function is like?
Besides, alt-click has no zooming effect in 2D plots, and ctrl-click in 2D has no effect whatsoever.
This is all in Snow Leopard for me, plotting with XQuartz 2.5.2.
