Handwritten math imput?
By lizardonunes at Fri, Oct 30 2009 8:28pm |
Have you ever heard about MoboMath? http://www.enventra.com/products/mobomath/overview.htm
Can we find a similar Mac application? Or the only alternatives are Parallels, Fusion, VPC, etc?
Do we need Windows drivers to use it with Wacom tablets?
Will it work in conjunction with LyX for Mac?
Thank you.

Math handwriting recognition
Sorry, I don't know a similar Mac program either. But did you try it on Windows already? How's usability? It looks fascinating, but I am not sure how useful this will be in practice - I am quite convinced that I can type LaTeX formulae faster than I could write them by hand.
It exports to LaTeX (see
It exports to LaTeX (see http://www.enventra.com/products/mobomath/videos.htm)
One of my questions is: How does it integrates with LyX for Mac + Parallels (Coherence)?
-------
P.S.: Unfortunately, I cannot type LaTeX as fast as I write formulas in a piece of paper...
Producing LaTeX
If you want nicely typeset maths equations, try writing them in Grapher (/Applications/Utilities/Grapher.app).
Once you've written them, you can then go and right click on the image, and copy it as TIFF, PDF, EPS, Text, and most importantly, LaTeX.
Hope others find this as useful as I have

Handwritten equations?
Well, no. I'm not looking for an application like LaTeXIT or MathType.
I'm looking for a way to write down equations with a Tablet on a Mac.
P.S.:
BTW, I've customized LyX to make it look more pleasant on a Mac:
Main window and TOC
View/Update Toolbar
Drop-down menu for equations
View LaTeX source
So, I'm fine with keyboard input...
Lyx math is not wysiwyg
I use texmacs for preparing class notes for which it does a good job. I recently tried Lyx and found that the equations display very badly. Of course when I make a pdf it comes out nicely. But it is not a wysiwyg editor as far as math typing is concerned. Am I missing some customization ?
MathMagic + MoboMath would be a perfect match
As MathMagic handles LaTeX and MathML well, it would be easy to drag&drop or paste equations from MoboMath if Enventra releases a Mac version.
However, the current MoboMath does not recognize many math/scientific symbols unfortunately. Although it has some better handling for Matrix, it looks many equation templates, such as division or vector, are still not supported.
Actually there were several lab level handwriting recognition solutions for Math for many years. But none of them were quite practically useful or successful as a product, especially when you write some complex equations and various scientific symbols.
If Enventra keep investing/working on MoboMath for one or two more years, there might be a chance to deliver a solution for more general audience.
