GNUplot doesn't work (with Octave)

Hi guys,
I previously used Octave on my iBook (OSX 10.46), having it installed, using the FINK package. everything was fine.

Now I tried to install Octave an other way following the instructions given on http://hpc.sourceforge.net/#octave and installed GnuPlot (4.0) and Aquaterm seprately.
X11 is installed on my mac as well.

However, neither when calling it from Octave, nor when starting it direcly, I get any graphical output from GNUPlot.

I already tried to update the Aquaterm, as well as the GNUPlot installation, but without any effect.

I don't know why it doesn't work. I assume the problem is somewhere in the communicatino between GNUPlot and Aquaterm. However there is no error message.

1) Can someone help me? give me some advise what to do?

2) How can I appropriatly uninstall these programms. I is all in the folders, hidden in the Finder, and i'm afraid the files are dispersed to a bunch of folders. is there a good way to uninstall in the unix environment?

thx,
malte

In your .bashrc file try

In your .bashrc file try adding these variables:

export AQUATERM_REPORT_TIMING=1
export AQUATERM_PATH=/Applications/AquaTerm.app
export GNUTERMAPP=/Applications/AquaTerm.app
export GNUTERM=aqua

You might have to log out/back in for these to take effect.

I had the same problem

I had the same problem because GnuPlot 4.0 is not availabel as a universal binary. I simply installed GnuPlot 4.1 following the instructions from

http://maba.wordpress.com/2006/08/02/scientific-plotting-on-mac-os-x-using-gnuplot-and-plot/

and now it seems to work. However GnuPlot 4.1 isn't officially released.

That doesn't work for me

If I add those lines to .bashrc (but modified because my AquaTerm is in a different location), then when I start Octave I get

>> Unknown or ambiguous terminal name 'aqua'

I'm trying to solve a similar problem as the original poster. I can run gnuplot in X11, so I can do plot/mesh/surf/etc, but I can't do imagesc, and (most importantly) specgram. I want to get that running (whether in X11 or AquaTerm I don't mind!).

System details: Intel Mac, Octave 2.1.73 downloaded from the HPC site, gnuplot 4.0 installed by fink and aquaterm 1.0 installed by macports.

I'd be grateful for any tips. Thanks in advance.

environment.plist ?

Hi,

You probably need to set-up an environment.plist. I think setting the variables above will only work for unix applications. If you want Aqua applications (i.e. AquaTerm) to be callable from unix apps you will need to this. This is certainly the case if you want to use a gnuplot interface (i.e. gnuplot_i) in you own code e.g. piping C-arrays of your own calculations from XCode to gnuplot.

Have a look at this post on macosx.com

Cheers,

Dan.

I think I remember having a

I think I remember having a similar problem once. It could be an error with the aquaterm installation. I got in touch with the developer of AquaTerm, he suggested uninstalling the macports install. And using the .dmg file on the aquaterm website. If I remember right, there was a problem with the 1.0 release of the aquaterm installer, macports could be using this? Try getting the 1.0.1 version.

Can you plot if you set your gnuplot terminal to X11?

i.e. set term x11 when you load gnuplot (or put the same line in you ~/.gnuplot file)

Cheers,

Dan.

gnuplot is compiled without

gnuplot is compiled without AquaTerm support, I believe. If I run gnuplot and do "set terminal", the list of available types doesn't mention aqua.

Thanks for your response - I upgraded AquaTerm as you recommend, anyway. Will need to recompile gnuplot next though.

(It's a shame the x11 version can't do bitmaps. No idea why not.)

Just use the binary

Just use the binary; makes life easier! Here is the gnuplot v4.0.0 link How do you mean bitmaps? What is is you're trying to do?

Dan.
