An Inexpensive Gel Imaging System using iPhoto
It looks like the clever folks from the Hirsh Lab at the University of Virginia have developed an inexpensive agarose gel documentation system using iPhoto coupled with ImageJ. Brief instructions for assembling the system are available, and if that's not enough for you they also provide a detailed manuscript describing the setup. They were able to integrate iPhoto and ImageJ using a plugin they wrote in Java. The source code for this plugin is available making it a perfect starting point for others looking to plug their scientific apps into iPhoto. I love it when I come across scientists who have decided to work smarter not harder by leveraging some of the simple, yet powerful tools that ship with OS X to augment their research.
